Does your child watch Lost!? If so, they'll likely encounter a slew of colorful animals they'll want to learn more about long after the show is over. Two types of animals that always pique the interest of young minds are mammals and amphibians.
Mammals and amphibians are two unique parts of the animal kingdom. While they have many similarities, how are the two different? Early Development One of the most significant differences between mammals and amphibians is how they develop. Mammals, such as cats and dogs, develop in a womb. After conception, these animals develop inside the reproductive system. Embryos grow into fetuses and continue to gestate until they're ready for birth. The birthing process is magical, resulting in fully-formed babies. For amphibians, the process is very different! Let's take the most famous amphibian, a frog, as an example. Development happens outside of the body. Females lay eggs that the males fertilize. After that, the parents don't influence development. The eggs continue to grow until the babies hatch. Frogs start their lives as tadpoles in the water. They feed on the egg and look for tiny food to eat. Eventually, they develop legs and make their way to land! Most amphibians spend part of their lives underwater, which is not something mammals can do. Blood Temperature Another key differentiator your child will learn about if they watch Lost! is blood temperature. Mammals are warm-blooded. That means they can regulate body temperature to stay safe and comfortable. Think of how a dog pants to cool down or bears have their thick fur coats to keep warm. Amphibians are cold-blooded. They take on the temperature of their surroundings. As a result, they must move to thermoregulate. Frogs will move to bask in the warm sun or swim in cooler waters. Natural Habitat We can't forget about where mammals and amphibians live. Mammals include a plethora of different creatures. You can find them all over the world. There are even some in the ocean! Mammals adapt well to different habitats. Unfortunately, you can't say the same for amphibians. They rely on water in many ways. As a result, they have to stay near bodies of water to survive.
